Plans are already underway
for the 2007 writing competition. This year we didn’t distinguish between
published and non-published works. For 2007 we will. We will also be
increasing the numbers of categories to encourage even more entries. Keep
checking this web page for updates. The deadline for entries for the
competition will be in January, 2007, but entries will be accepted any time
after October 1, 2006.
All entries must be
accompanied by a completed entry form. Entry forms may be
downloaded from our website.
To qualify for entry, an
original copy of the work must be submitted. Original copies are defined as:
Published works:
A copy of any book in which the entry is the entire work or a portion of the
work (such as a story in an anthology). A tear sheet from a newspaper, magazine
or other publication will be accepted, although the publication in its entirety
is preferred.
Unpublished works
A copy of the work in its entirety.
Format:
All entries must be submitted in hard copy. E-mailed entries or entries
submitted on disks or CDs will not be accepted.
Entry fees:
$10 per entry. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Public Safety
Writers Association.
Awards
All entries, winning or non-winning will be accompanied by a short critique
by the judges. Awards will be made at the annual PSWA Conference. Entrants
need not be present to win. Those not attending the conference who have won
awards will be notified after the conference and their awards will be mailed to
them. Awards of first, second, third and honorable mention will be available in
each category, although not all places in a given category will necessarily be
awarded. The awarding of places will be at the discretion of the judges. In
2006, one grand prize of a $1099 book package from iUniverse was awarded. Those
placing first or second in each category received an engraved wooden plaque.
Those placing third or receiving an honorable mention received a certificate.
We are hoping to enlist some corporate sponsorship for our writing competition,
so awards may vary next year. Keep checking this website for updates.
